HUNTSVILLE — Republican voters will go to the polls next week for a special primary election for state Senate District 9.

The primary is Jan. 9 between former Morgan County Commissioner Stacy George and two state House incumbents, Rep. Wes Kitchens (R-Arab) and Rep. Brock Colvin (R-Albertville). District 9 includes parts of northern Blount County and southern Madison County and all of Marshall County.

The seat opened up when former Senate Majority Leader Clay Scofield resigned to take the position of executive vice president of the Business Council of Alabama.

No Democrats qualified to run for the election. If a run-off election is needed, it will be Feb. 6. The special general election is April 23. Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
