Severe thunderstorms, possible tornadoes across region today

HUNTSVILLE — The Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal and area schools have made changes in their schedules today with the possibility of severe weather, including tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service Huntsville office, severe thunderstorms are expected across the entire region this afternoon and evening.

The Army Garrison Command and Marshall Space Flight Center recommended “maximize telework (today) and consider early release of their workforce to allow for a safe departure.”
Army Garrison services are closing at noon, including the Child Development Center, One-Stop and MWR facilities. The Bowling Center will be closed. Fox Army Health Center will close at 2 p.m., Team Redstone said.

The storm system is expected to enter northwest Alabama around 1 p.m. or so, and move east before moving out of northeast Alabama just before midnight.

“Thunderstorms will develop around midday and intensify as they spread eastward into northern AL/southern middle Tennessee,” the weather office said with “high confidence” this morning.

“The storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts of 60-70 mph (70-80 mph in the most intense storms), large hail (1-inch in diameter) and several tornadoes, a few of which could be EF2 intensity or stronger.”

The system is the leading edge of a cold front that will bring strong winds and cooler temperatures into the region Wednesday with a possibility of frost Thursday night into Friday morning.
