Shining a light to honor veterans, Madison County launches Operation Green Light

HUNTSVILLE — As Veterans Day approaches, Madison County is dedicating the period from now through Nov. 4 to salute and honor the service and sacrifice of U.S. military service members.

To do this, the county is illuminating county buildings green, a tradition known as Operation Green Light.

Through Operation Green Light, Madison County encourages residents to join in recognizing the importance of honoring veterans by displaying green lights in a window of their place of business or home through Veterans Day.

The commission is partnering with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2702 (VFW Post 2702) to raise awareness about the many resources in Madison County available for veterans.

“Service members often feel the highest amount of stress as they transition back to civilian life and are at high risk for suicide,” said Madison County District Six Commissioner Violet Edwards. “By lighting our county up with green lights, they can feel the love and know that we have resources available to help them.

“We want our veterans to feel support and appreciation from our community for their service and dedication to our country.”

VFW Post 7202 is the largest VFW Post in Alabama, with more than 500 members, and has contributed more than $200,000 in community service projects to the Huntsville and Madison County area last year.

Approximately 200,000 service members transition to civilian communities annually, with an estimated 20 percent in the next five years. Post 2707 offers a wide range of assistance aimed at helping veterans of every generation.

This is Madison County’s fifth year participating in Operation Green Light, a nationwide movement spearheaded by the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, uniting counties in support of military veterans.
