Space industry leaders honored at von Braun celebration

HUNTSVILLE – Several space industry leaders and academics were honored at the annual  Wernher von Braun Memorial Dinner, respectfully dubbed “The Space Prom.”

This year’s sold-out event welcomed local businesses and space enthusiasts dressed to the nines to celebrate scholarships and award recipients who are helping to shape the future of space exploration.

The annual celebration culminates the yearly Von Braun Symposium and serves as the largest fundraiser event hosted by the Huntsville chapter of the National Space Club.

This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Elizabeth Barrios, a structural materials engineer at the Marshall Space Flight Center.

The following individuals and groups were honored with awards and scholarships:

  • The Von Braun Space Flight Trophy was awarded to former Senator Harrison “Jack” Schmitt.
  • Distinguished Science Award went to Dr. Thomas H. Zurbuchen
  • Educator of the Year went to Willie Bradford
  • The Jack Lee Service Award went to Gene Goldman
  • The Communications Award went to Marcia Stockton Lindstrom
  • The Rising Star Award went to FTC Browncoats Team 7842
  • The Astronautics Engineering Award went to the James Webb Space Telescope Team
