Spears announces she will not be seeking re-election, to pursue ‘greater role’

MADISON — In a heartfelt announcement shared with 256 Today, Madison City Councilwoman Connie Spears said she will not seek re-election for the District 2 seat, marking the end of her current term.

Spears, who has represented the district since 2020, expressed pride in the accomplishments achieved during her tenure and her commitment to the city’s continued growth.

“Over the past four years, we have accomplished many wonderful things for the city of Madison,” Spears said in her statement. “We have great schools, strong economic development, and responsible growth. I am proud of the small role I played in these accomplishments.”

Spears reflected on the strides the city has made, but also revealed she is ready to explore new opportunities.

“There are other pursuits that I would like to apply my talents and knowledge to,” she said. “That is why, today, I am announcing I will not run for re-election for Madison City Council.”

Throughout her time in office, Spears has been a strong advocate for responsible growth and community development. She emphasized that Madison will always be her home, and although she will step away from council duties, her passion for the city remains unchanged.

“Madison is my home, and I will always work for its success and growth,” Spears said. “But now is the time for someone else to take a leadership role in District 2.”

Spears also expressed her gratitude to the voters of District 2 for entrusting her with the opportunity to serve.

“I would like to thank the voters of District 2 for electing me to serve them,” she said. “I look forward to serving our community in a greater role in the future.”

At this time, Spears has not specified what that greater role will be.

Spears served on the Madison Board of Education for 10 years before running for the District 2 city council seat. Spears defeated incumbent Steve Smith, who was City Council president at the time of the election.

Spears also serves as president of the Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARCOG). Founded in 1968, TARCOG works to unite municipal, county, and state governments and federal agencies to work together on improving the region issues in DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison, and Marshall counties.

Spears’ announcement leaves District 2 open for new leadership, with the election set for August. In 2021, the Alabama Legislature moved many of the state’s municipal elections to 2025, adding an extra year to current leaders’ terms.
