Sportsplex at Madison County’s Sharon Johnston Park to open in spring

NEW MARKET – Just a short 12 months ago, ground was broken at Sharon Johnston Park for a $14.2 million sportsplex and community center.

Now, with construction approximately 50% complete, the facility is scheduled to open in the spring.

“We see this facility as an additional amenity to our growing community,” said Madison County District One Commissioner Tom Brandon. “Once construction is complete, it will help alleviate the growing pains of the four other recreation centers located in District One.

“The citizens of Madison County will be able to get active and connect with one another in a space built for everyone.”

The facility will provide two gyms with courts available for basketball, volleyball or pickleball. There will be an upstairs walking track and an exercise room for group classes and activities.

A first-floor concession stand will provide snacks and refreshments for purchase during events.

The building features community rooms to rent for parties or meetings, equipped with monitors to show presentations during meetings, if needed.

Also under construction is a pool house, adjacent to a resurfaced 13-foot-deep, Olympic-sized pool. The pool facilities include locker rooms, restrooms, a concession area and newly surfaced non-slip decking around the pool.

The 267,000-gallon pool will open next Memorial Day Weekend in time for summer activities.

Consolidated Construction of Huntsville is building the center and Frameworks Architecture of Decatur designed the 32,000 square-foot facility.
