Strokes of genius: Mentee artwork displayed in partnership Huntsville Parks and Rec, HMCPL

HUNTSVILLE — Oscar Wilde, a famous poet and playwright from the 19th century, wrote an essay called “Life Imitates Art far more than Art Imitates Life.”

The essay explores the philosophical idea that life is influenced by art more than the other way around. While many people today may not be familiar with Wilde’s work, presumably many more are familiar with the saying taken from the work mentioned in the first sentence.

Life Imitates Art.

Today, the City of Huntsville Parks and Recreation’s Male Mentorship Program along with the downtown branch of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library (HMCPL) announced a weeklong display of artwork by young participants of the mentorship program.

“We are honored to showcase creations by these talented artists and help to connect a wider community with the meaningful mission of this mentorship program,” said HMCPL Deputy Director Connie Chow.

The initiative to create and display the mentees’ artwork was led by artist and former Alabama A&M tennis standout Jamal “Fresko” Turner and Curtis Jeter, a Recreation Leader for Huntsville Parks & Recreation. Turner’s unique artwork graces the National Fitness Campaign (NFC) Fitness Court® public art installation at Legacy Park. Jeter, a former UAB football standout, is also a talented artist.

“Our mentors and mentees share a passion for athletics and the arts, which fuels our commitment to inspire and empower the next generation,” said Huntsville Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “These collaborations underscore the transformative power of mentorship and instill confidence and creativity in young minds.

The artwork created by participants of Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s Male Mentorship Program will be displayed at the HMCPL downtown Huntsville location from Saturday, April 27 through Friday, May 3. The works, comprising three 48-inch-by-60-inch pieces, can be found in the youth area on the first floor.
