The Salvation Army in Huntsville $20,000 short of Christmas fundraising goal

HUNTSVILLE – With Christmas closing in, one of the nation’s oldest charities is asking for community help making up a $20,000 shortfall in an iconic holiday event.

The Salvation Army urges those who would like to aid the final push to do so in the next few days to help reach a $150,000 target for the 2023 Red Kettle Campaign.

The annual campaign is the organization’s primary fundraiser, which provides year-round assistance to community members experiencing unforeseen crisis or financial hardship, according to Commanding Officer Maj. Richard Watts.

“This year has been challenging for many individuals and families in our community as the cost of living has outpaced wages,” he said. “We have seen a sharp increase in requests for food, rent and utilities assistance.”

Red Kettles began on the streets of San Francisco in 1891 after Capt. Joseph McFee saw the darkness, hunger, and poverty on the streets of San Francisco and wanted to make a difference in his neighborhood that Christmas. Money was raised to feed dinner to hungry residents.

The local organization served more than 80,000 clients last year, helping individuals and families to remain in their homes, find safe shelter, feed their families and afford essential utilities.

“I am optimistic our community will continue to donate generously in the remaining days to support our mission to serve our neighbors when they need it most,” Watts said. “Every contribution, regardless of size, has the potential to transform a life.’’

Although The Salvation Army, a Christian-based fundraiser, will have one less day to fundraise using Red Kettles as Christmas Eve falls on Sunday, online giving is available at www.salvationarmyalm.org/huntsville.

Contributions also may be mailed or dropped off at 2114 Oakwood Ave., Huntsville 35810.

“The Salvation Army is extremely grateful for the support of our community,” Watts said. “Every dollar raised stays local to provide meals to families in need, keep the power on for seniors struggling to pay utility bills, and offer a pathway to stability and hope for struggling individuals throughout the year.”
