Traditional music coffeehouse features Microwave Dave & friends

HUNTSVILLE – Huntsville favorites Microwave Dave Gallaher, Luke Johnston and Josh Taylor will be picking and shoveling at the Huntsville Traditional Music Association’s Coffeehouse on June 27 in the old country church at Burritt Museum.

The trio will present “Acoustic Blues in the Round.”

Gallaher blasted onto the Huntsville music scene before Huntsville had a music scene. He landed in Huntsville in 1989 forming his blues band, Microwave Dave and the Nukes, and has been delighting North Alabama audiences ever since.

Since 1993, Gallaher has played regular solo blues performances when the Nukes are not on tour, and he continues to work in radio as a deejay and host of the popular “Talkin’ the Blues” on WLRH 89.3 FM and on WJAB 90.9 FM.

He was honored in 2015 with Microwave Dave Day on the last Sunday in June as a community recognition for his early contributions to entertainment and blues music education in the Valley.

Joining him for the “Acoustic Blues in the Round” for the HTMA Coffeehouse event this month, are Taylor – a young and talented finger-style guitar player; and Johnston, known for his cigar box guitar, reminiscent of Bo Diddley, and the three-stringed shovel guitar designed by the man who made it famous, Justin Johnson.

The doors open at 6:45 p.m. Association President Lynne Edmondson and friends will bring her soulful, weeping fiddle to the stage at 7 p.m.

The HTMA objective is to preserve and perpetuate traditional music, instruments, and styles of rendition including but not limited to what is commonly referred to as folk, traditional, and old-time music.

The Coffeehouse events are made possible by a 2023 Arts & Cultural grant from Arts Huntsville, and is funded by the City of Huntsville.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 cash only at the door. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
