ATHENS — Washington came to Limestone County today.
Well, sort of.
Actually, Sen. Tommy Tuberville virtually joined Brittley Thompson’s AP Government class at Clements High School to answer questions about his role in government and discuss his work in Washington, D.C.
During the Zoom conversation, Tuberville (R-Auburn) shared his concerns about the growing national debt and other issues.
“If you sat in your chair right there for seven days a week, 24 hours a day, it would take you three years to count to a trillion,” Tuberville said. “That’s how much a trillion dollars is. We’re $32 trillion in debt — that’s how much you owe.
“If you broke it all down to every American, right now, every American owes $250,000 on this debt.”
The senator also discussed his work on the Senate Armed Services Committee, particularly as it relates to national security and bringing U.S. Space Command to Huntsville.
“We were awarded Space Command two years ago, then the Biden administration came in and said, ‘Well, we might not want to do that,’” Tuberville said. “So they did all these reviews again and … We won it in terms of Huntsville. We won it again and we were the No. 1 choice; Nebraska was second, San Antonio was third, and the place where it’s at right now was fourth — in Colorado.
“But politics has gotten involved, and it’s like pulling teeth around here to get the Secretary of the Air Force and the president to say, ‘Okay, let’s get this going.’ We’re behind in space. China is—if we had a space war right now, we’d be like a junior high team. We’re not close to China or even Russia.”
