HUNTSVILLE – It’s a matter of time for U.S. Paralympics Cycling – literally.

The athletes are back in the Rocket City this weekend and the public is invited to watch and urged to drive with caution.

The one-day event serves as the selection race for the upcoming UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cups in Europe, and many of the U.S. athletes who medaled at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris are scheduled to compete in the Rocket City.

The race is presented by U.S. Paralympics Cycling, Medalist Sports, the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, Cummings Research Park, the City of Huntsville, the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and many other partners.

This race is a time trial, meaning it will be a race against the clock for more than 60 athletes.

Cyclists will be training on the course Wednesday through the end of the week and motorists are urged to use caution. Some of the cyclists are on handcycles which are lower to the ground.

The official training ride with all of the athletes is Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. on  Explorer Boulevard. The road will be open for traffic.

However, all of Explorer Boulevard around Cummings Research Park will be closed Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also, the southbound side of Explorer from Farrow Road to Moquin Road will be closed 6 a.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday for construction and take-down of the finish line.

Parking is available to watch Saturday’s event:

  • Leidos – 1053 Enterprise Way. Take University Drive to Enterprise Way, and turn there
  • Intrepid – 990 Explorer Boulevard. Take Enterprise Way to Discovery and turn in from Discovery
  • Auburn University Research & Innovation Campus – 345 Voyager Way. Come in via Old Madison Pike to Voyager Way
  • Columbia High School – 300 Explorer Boulevard. Enter from Slaughter Road to Farrow Road, and turn in the back way to the high school and drive around to the front. This will be the busiest area for parking, so it’s suggested to use the other three locations

This event is a small preview of next year’s UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships next yea in Cummings Research Park. There, athletes will be earning points to compete in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

The races are free and open to the public. No tickets are needed. Fans can locate all along the course.
