HUNTSVILLE — There is a case of the “blues” spreading through the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus and it’s also affecting the alumni.
But, it’s a good case because this is Homecoming week for the Chargers. And, this year’s celebration will be a little different from years past.
In fact, UAH is creating new traditions:
- The Paint the Town Blue displays will be featured on the Altenkirch Lawn Greenway closer to Charger Union. In the past, the lawn decorations were spread around the campus. Now, they will be together so the students, alums, and friends can walk the campus and see them all in one space.
- Thursday’s “White Out” basketball games will be particularly special as 128 student-athletes who earned a 4.0 GPA during the last year are recognized. The Homecoming court will be welcomed at halftime of the women’s game.
- Friday night is lit, literally. There will be a bonfire, food trucks and music.
On the athletics side of Homecoming, the Chargers will host 10 games, highlighted by the final two regular season games for UAH men’s and women’s basketball Thursday and Saturday.
The Chargers, ranked No. 4 in the nation and riding a 22-game win streak, clinched first-round hosting rights for next month’s Gulf South Conference men’s tournament.
The women’s basketball team is zeroing in on first-round hosting rights for the GSC tournament as well.
The Chargers are second in the GSC standings at a 14-3 league record to start UAH’s Homecoming Week.
Limited reserved seating for Thursday and Saturday is available through HomeTown Ticketing, while general admission seating upstairs is free, courtesy of Bentley Buick GMC.
The Chargers baseball and softball teams open Gulf South Conference play Friday and Saturday at Charger Park with each hosting a three-game series against Christian Brothers.
Friday’s baseball slate was changed to a doubleheader at noon, while Saturday will be a single game at noon.
The softball team will be playing a Friday doubleheader at 1 p.m. and a single game at noon Saturday.
The changes were made due to rain in the forecast for the weekend. Admission is free to all Charger Park regular season games, courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.
Meanwhile, before Saturday’s basketball doubleheader (2 p.m. and 4 p.m.), fans are urged to take advantage of the Sideline at Spragins Tailgate at noon near Spragins Hall.
The event will provide a village of tents featuring food, giveaways, and family-friendly fun such as face painting, STEM activities, and crafts. DJ Papa Rooster will amp up Charger fans, and Alabama Energy will have two electric cars on display. Weiner Von Braun will serve up tasty hot dog meals. Alumni who check in at the Alumni Association tent can stay warm with their free beanie hat.
The basketball games will have Senior Day ceremonies prior to each program’s regular season finale, while the men’s halftime features the crowning of the Homecoming Court.
