UNA Coaches Caravan keeping it local this year

FLORENCE — Coaches from the University of North Alabama will meet and greet the community next week during the second annual Coaches Caravan.

Head football coach Brent Dearmon, head men’s basketball coach Tony Pujol, and head women’s soccer coach Chris Walker will be on hand Thursday at George’s Steak Pit in Sheffield to chat about their upcoming seasons and what’s on tap for UNA Athletics.

And with the recent groundbreaking for the university’s multipurpose Bank Independent Stadium on campus, there will be plenty to discuss.

The inaugural UNA Coaches Caravan was last year in the Huntsville area. Payton Haslam, director of development for UNA Athletics, said that event exceeded expectations and solidified the decision to hold it each summer.

“We had a great turnout from the northwest Alabama community – from Huntsville to the Shoals, to our wonderful media members throughout the region,” he said. “This furthered our belief in the growth of the North Alabama Athletics brand and the ultimate decision to make it an annual event during the summer.”

This summer, UNA Athletics is keeping the caravan close to home with the event in Sheffield.

“Last year’s emphasis was to take our brand to Huntsville to expand our reach,” Haslam said. “This year’s focus of keeping it local is to provide everyone the opportunity to interact with our coaches and get excited about the upcoming sports seasons.

“Scott and Leigh Anna Trimble at George’s Steak Pit have been gracious and excited about hosting this event. It will showcase a beautiful venue, fantastic food, and a great evening talking about North Alabama Athletics.”

Members of the coaching staff, support staff and student-athletes will also be in attendance. The event is 5-7 p.m. George’s Steak Pit is at 1206 S. Jackson Highway.

“All of our coaches who are in town have made it a priority to step out into the community for this great event,” Haslam said.

The program will feature a question-and-answer session with specific coaches as well as opportunities to mingle throughout the evening.

“The focus of the program will truly be for our coaches to meet our wonderful supporters,” Haslam said. “Make sure to join us.”
