UNA’s $50 for 50 campaign honors 50th anniversary of Title IX

FLORENCE — To mark the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, the University of North Alabama has announced a $50 for 50 campaign to support its women’s athletic programs.

Title IX is the landmark gender equity law enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It bans sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. The legislation requires public schools to ensure equitable sports opportunities to students, regardless of gender, and has created greater involvement of women in sports.

As part of UNA honoring the anniversary, the public is invited to partner with Lion Athletics with a gift of $50 or more to support women’s programs. The funds will provide resources to shape the trajectory of the university’s eight women’s programs.

Also, in partnership with UNA First Lady Dena Kitts, the campaign is offering membership to the Women of Influence program through a gift of $250. This gift will include the cost of the membership to Women of Influence and provide $50 for UNA women’s athletics.

“Title IX is an important, inclusive milestone in athletics,” Kitts said. “Its impact on gender equity has changed and challenged the fabric of collegiate sports nationwide for the better. As we celebrate this transformative legislation, I am honored to partner with UNA Athletics in this meaningful way.

“The philanthropic principles of Women of Influence directly align with Title IX’s purpose. It is my privilege and responsibility to dedicate financial resources to support, encourage, and enhance the opportunities for our female student-athletes.”

Since women’s sport programs began at UNA in the late 1960s, the women’s teams have won 31 conference championships, seven regional championships and two NCAA national championships. In all, 49 UNA women’s athletic teams have advanced to NCAA postseason tournaments.

“This initiative and partnership with the Women of Influence program is symbolic of the prominent voices that women have on campus, and in athletics,” said Payton Haslam, director of development for the UNA Athletic Department. “We want to continue building a culture of sustained excellence for our female student-athletes and celebrate the incredible history of women’s sports at UNA.

“It brings me great joy knowing that generous support will provide additional resources for our women’s programs.”
