White Thang: North Alabama’s cousin of Sasquatch

HUNTSVILLE — While the typical ghosts, witches, Barbies and Power Rangers will be strolling the neighborhoods tonight, there are tales of a creature prowling the wilderness of North Alabama.

It’s called the Alabama White Thang and people in the region have claimed to have sighted it since the early 1900s.

According to North American Cryptids, the White Thang is mostly seen in a triangular area between Morgan, Etowah and Jefferson counties, where it lurks in the woods and fields. Some of the places where it has been reported include Walnut Grove, Moody’s Chapel, Happy Hollow and Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. But it has also been spotted in other parts of Alabama and even in neighboring states.

The creature, apparently, is harmless. Some describe it as a huge, hairy beast that stands on two legs, is about 8 feet tall and has glowing red eyes. Others say it looks like a white lion or a kangaroo with a cat’s head. Some even claim it can shape-shift into different forms.

The White Thang also purportedly makes noises as a high-pitched scream or a baby crying.

But one thing that most witnesses agree on is that the White Thang is fast, agile and terrifying. It can run on all fours or stand upright. It can jump over fences and climb trees.

And it can disappear in the blink of an eye.

What is the origin of the White Thang? No one knows for sure. Some speculate that it is a genetic mutation or an escaped exotic animal. Others suggest that it is a supernatural being or an alien visitor. Some even believe that it is a guardian spirit or a protector of nature.

Whatever it is, the White Thang has become a part of Alabama folklore and culture. It has inspired books, documentaries, songs and art. It has also attracted curiosity seekers, researchers and hunters who want to find out more about this elusive creature.
