Winchester Road widening project entering final phase, construction on remaining section set to begin next summer

HUNTSVILLE — A widening project that north Huntsville commuters have been clamoring for years is being addressed.

With the city’s growth booming along the Winchester Road corridor, traffic has increased exponentially along the road which is two lanes along some stretches.

On Thursday, the city announced the project to widen Winchester Road is set to enter its final phase after approval of an updated surveying and design contract with TTL.

Pending the completion of right of way acquisition, the construction for the remaining section of the road is anticipated to begin next summer.

The $245,110 contract will update final plans and tract maps to reflect current conditions on the site for construction, consisting of 2.3 miles of a new five-lane roadway between Dominion Circle and Naugher Road.

The TTL contract calls for:

  • Updating the right of way map and legal land descriptions for acquisition
  • Providing changes to topography and drainage resulting from new developments along the corridor
  • Ensuring plans reflect current specifications set by the Alabama Department of Transportation in accordance with funding requirements

Once complete, Winchester Road will be five lanes for approximately 9 miles from Pulaski Pike to Bell Factory Road. The expansion is expected to help the city keep pace with housing and rapid business growth.
