HUNTSVILLE – The Women’s Economic Development Council membership applications are open for 2025, inviting women leaders across Madison County to join a network dedicated to advancing female leadership in business and community.
“WEDC is a place for women to connect, learn, and grow in their professional journeys,” said Melanie Thornton, president of the WEDC. “Our goal is to create a community of women who support each other and work collectively to make a lasting impact on our local economy and society.”

With a membership of over 150 women, the WEDC continues its mission to champion women in leadership roles and foster economic growth in the region. The organization offers monthly leadership development meetings, mentorship opportunities, and exclusive networking events designed to support women at all stages of their careers.
“Joining WEDC means being part of a powerful community of women business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals who are committed to making a difference,” Thornton said. “We’re excited to welcome new members who are ready to engage, share their expertise, and work toward building an even stronger, more inclusive future for our community.”
Applications for new members will be accepted from now until September. Aspiring members must be sponsored by two current members, with specific details available on the WEDC website. Women in leadership positions across various sectors, from business owners and executives to professionals in healthcare, law, and defense, are encouraged to apply.
“The opportunity to mentor younger women is a big part of what we do,” Thornton added. “Programs like our Milestones Initiative help us nurture the next generation of leaders by providing them with educational opportunities and real-world insights from those who have already paved the way.”
