DECATUR – Featuring works of art from Morgan County area students, the annual Showcase of Young Talent kicks off today.
The Alabama Center for the Arts’ annual Youth Art Month celebration includes art from K-12 students from Morgan County, Decatur City, and Hartselle City schools, as well as students from area private schools. The categories are Early Elementary, Elementary, Middle School, and High School.
The exhibit runs through March 28 in the Alabama Center for the Arts’ Main Gallery and Walking Gallery. An artists’ reception is planned for March 20 from 5:30-7 p.m.
Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs and promotes art material safety. Administered by The Council for Art Education, the program helps children of all ages develop problem solving, observation, and communication skills while enhancing their creativity.
The event is sponsored by the Alabama Center for the Arts, Carnegie Visual Arts Center, and Decatur/Morgan area art educators. “YEA Decatur Art Awards!” will be presented by Daybreak Rotary Club of Decatur.
The Carnegie provides educational and cultural opportunities to the Decatur area and strives to encourage a greater involvement in art at all levels and ages. In addition, the Carnegie often awards scholarships to their summer camps and offers a variety of other programs, events, and collections for all ages.
The Alabama Center for the Arts is at 133 2nd Ave. NE in Decatur. It is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon.
