13 years and counting: Decatur hosts Open Cup soccer tournament

DECATUR – The highly anticipated Open Cup tournament, sanctioned by USSSA, is returning to Decatur for the 13th consecutive year.

Kicking off Saturday, the tournament will see about 80 teams from across the eastern United States compete at Decatur’s Jack Allen Recreation Complex.

The Open Cup provides competitive soccer opportunities for youth teams ranging from U9 to U19, with divisions including Premier, Challenge, Classic, and Academy levels for girls and boys.

Each age division and gender will have at least one elite level of play, supplemented by one to two competitive divisions at lower tiers whenever possible. Teams competing in each age division will have the chance to vie for championship titles and runner-up honors, with trophies awarded accordingly.

Matches will take place at the Jack Allen Recreation Complex, recognized as one of the premier soccer facilities in the South. Boasting 11 fields, including two championship fields, the complex promises a top-notch environment for participants and spectators.

Event organizer Scott Spencer said about 80 teams  from 16 states are participating in this year’s Open Cup. Notably, tournaments have also drawn teams from Brazil, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Mexico, El Salvador, and Panama.

A parking pass valid for the entire tournament weekend is available for $10 per vehicle. For information about the tournament, visit http://www.premiersoccerservices.com/open-cup.
