August is moving right along, but there is still plenty happening across North Alabama. From live music and baseball to an interactive museum experience and an evening of art and entertainment, this week’s lineup offers something for a variety of interests. Here are a few events taking place around the region from Aug. 15-23.
Gladys Knight at the VBC Mark C. Smith Concert Hall – Huntsville
August 15
Legendary singer Gladys Knight will take the stage at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville on Aug. 15. The seven-time Grammy Award winner is known for hits including “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “That’s What Friends Are For.” The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available online.
Berman Escape Room at the Berman Museum – Anniston
August 15-16
For a different kind of museum experience, head to Anniston this weekend for an interactive escape room at the Berman Museum. On Aug. 15-16, teams of two to six will step into a fictional scenario inspired by the museum’s history, working together to solve puzzles, crack ciphers and uncover clues before time runs out. The experience is open to ages 10 and older, with an adult required for participants 16 and younger. Sessions are available at several times throughout the weekend, and pre-registration is required. Tickets are $60 per group, with a $5 discount for Anniston Museums and Gardens members.
Goo Goo Dolls at the Orion Amphitheater – Huntsville
August 18
The Goo Goo Dolls will bring their catalog of pop-rock hits to The Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville on Aug. 18, with Neon Trees joining as special guests. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. and Apollo South opening at 5 p.m. The band, known for songs including “Iris,” “Slide” and “Black Balloon,” has sold more than 15 million records worldwide and earned four Grammy Award nominations. Tickets are available online.
Rocket City Trash Pandas vs. Biloxi Shuckers – Madison
August 18-23
Trash Pandas in action Aug. 18-23 when the Biloxi Shuckers come to Toyota Field in Madison for a six-game series. Along with a full week of Double-A baseball, the homestand will feature themed nights and promotions, including a Nelson Rada Gold Glove bobblehead giveaway, Huntsville Stars Night, Cullman Oktoberfest Night and Lunáticos Day. Single-game tickets and ticket packages are available through the Trash Pandas.
$5 after 5 featuring Josh Taylor – Huntsville
August 20
Spend Thursday evening at the Huntsville Museum of Art for $5 After 5, featuring live music from Madison guitarist Josh Taylor. On Aug. 20, the museum will be open from 5-8 p.m., with Taylor performing from 6-7 p.m. The award-winning fingerstyle guitarist, composer and singer brings a mix of musical influences to his performances. Admission is $5 for nonmembers, while museum members receive free admission. Guests can also explore the museum’s exhibitions throughout the evening, and those 21 and older can purchase wine by the glass for $7.
From an evening with live music to a night at the ballpark, this week brings plenty of ways to make the most of August in North Alabama.
