A vintage gift: ‘Adopt a Vine’ at Toney’s La Famiglia Winery

TONEY — Looking for a gift that grows more meaningful with time and comes with wine?

La Famiglia Vineyards and Winery in Toney is launching its first Adopt a Vine program, giving guests the chance to connect personally with the vineyard, the wine, and the family behind it all.

Bev Massa co-owns the winery with her husband, winemaker Tom Fitzgerald (256 Today)

“If you’re looking for a unique gift, Adopt a Vine is what we’d like to introduce you to,” said Bev Massa, who co-owns the winery with her husband, winemaker Tom Fitzgerald. “You adopt a vine in the vineyard for someone that you love and it could be for a graduation, wedding, anniversary, or just because.”

The program kicks off Saturday with a special event. For $75, each vine adoption comes with a personalized certificate, a designated location of the adopted vine in the vineyard, and an invitation for two to the future wine release celebration, complete with tastings, hors d’oeuvres, and a bottle of wine made from the adopted vine’s grapes.

“They’ll come for a private tasting with others that have that varietal,” Massa said. “They’ll be able to try other different varieties with that, and then they’ll have appetizers and they’ll get a bottle of that.”

The couple’s deep connection to family and tradition is the foundation of La Famiglia.

“The vineyard is located in Toney. It’s called La Famiglia, the family, which is very important to us,” Massa said. “It’s a nod to our families that are still in Italy, but also to the ones who left and came to America for a better life. Even though they’re not physically here with us, they’re here spiritually with us.”

Fitzgerald has cultivated vineyards over the years. Now, with vines he’s carefully developed to thrive in Alabama soil, the Adopt a Vine program adds one more way for visitors to feel part of the family.

La Famiglia Vineyards and Winery is open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.
