Absentee voting now open for Huntsville municipal elections

HUNTSVILLE — The City of Huntsville has announced that absentee voting for the Aug. 27 municipal election is now open to registered voters provided they meet the necessary requirements.

Circumstances that would allow an individual to obtain an absentee ballot deal with the voter’s health, their location on election day, and their level of volunteer work at the polls.

A voter is elgible for an absentee ballot specifically if:

  • They will be absent on election day
  • They are ill or have a physical disability that prevents a trip to the polling place
  • They are a registered Alabama voter who is temporarily living outside the county (such as a member of the Armed Forces, a voter employed outside of the United States, a college student, or a spouse or child of such a person)
  • They are an appointed election officer or poll watcher at a polling place other than their
    regular polling place
  • They work a required shift – 10 hours or more – that coincides with polling hours

Absentee ballots must be postmarked by Aug. 26 and received by noon Aug. 27 to be counted. Voters can also hand-deliver their ballot to an absentee election manager by close of business on Aug. 26.

The candidates

The following City Council candidates have qualified to appear on the municipal ballot:

  • District 1
    Devyn S. Keith, incumbent
    Reggie McKenzie
    Michelle Watkins
  • District 5
    John Meredith, incumbent
    Kim Caudle Lewis

The following Board of Education candidates have qualified to appear on the ballot:

  • District 1
    Will Culver
    Claudia Harris
    Chaundra M. Jones
    Pat King
  • District 5
    Carlos Mathews, incumbent
    Zara R. Broadenax

The City Clerk’s Office will accept absentee applications by mail through 5 p.m. Aug. 20. The last day for a voter to apply for an absentee ballot in person is Aug. 22, and Aug. 26 is the last day to apply for an emergency absentee ballot.

Ballot applications can be delivered to the City Clerk’s Office on the third floor of City Hall, 305 Fountain Circle. Completed applications can also be mailed to:
