ALDOT repairing I-565/I-65 bridge and ramp damaged by steel coil

(Alabama Department of Transportation contributed)

HUNTSVILLE — Crews are repairing an I-565 bridge and exit ramp after a steel coil fell from a truck Tuesday afternoon at the interchange with I-65.

The work will require the outside travel line to be closed for asphalt repair, the Alabama Department of Transportation said. Motorists should expect delays on I-565 westbound.

The approach, deck and rail of the flyover bridge from I-565 westbound to I-65 southbound were damaged in several places, ALDOT said.

ALDOT said crews patched lightly damaged areas but will cover two more heavily-damaged areas along the shoulder with metal plates.

Crews will reopen the outside travel lane of the ramp and bridge once temporary repairs are completed and the roadway is clear.

ALDOT said work on a permanent repair for the bridge deck and rail will come later. The outside shoulder will remain closed until further notice to keep traffic away from the damaged guardrail and plated areas of the bridge deck.
