HUNTSVILLE – Citizens interested in learning about city government and making a difference in the Huntsville community are invited to apply for the Civic Engagement Academy’s spring 2025 session.
This free, eight-week program is designed to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to become more involved in their community. Through a combination of classroom instruction and interactive activities, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of civic engagement.
“The Civic Engagement Academy is not just a program; it’s a pathway to creating positive change in our community,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. “We encourage anyone passionate about community involvement to apply and join us in this transformative experience.”
The spring session will begin March 18 with an orientation, followed by weekly classes every Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. Topics covered throughout the program include:
- March 18: Orientation/How Our City Operates
- March 25: Our City Growing
- April 1: Our City Safe, Secure & Responding
- April 8: Our City at Work at City Hall
- April 15: Our City Maintaining
- April 22: Our City Engaging

To apply, individuals must be at least 19 years old and reside, own a business or be a student in Huntsville or the surrounding area. Local influencers — whether emerging or established — who are eager to enhance community involvement are also encouraged to apply.
To successfully graduate from the program, participants are expected to attend at least seven of the eight classes. The curriculum is designed to equip individuals with practical knowledge about local government functions, public safety, economic development and community engagement, empowering them to make a meaningful impact in their neighborhoods.
The spring application period closes Feb. 14. Those interested in applying can visit //HuntsvilleAL.gov/CEA for more information and to submit an application.
