Huntsville residents have a new place to play, compete and stay active as city leaders officially opened the John Hunt Park Recreation Center on Monday.

Mayor Tommy Battle joined city officials and community members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the 60,850-square-foot facility, the newest addition to Huntsville’s largest park.

Located at 3035 Leeman Ferry Road, the recreation center is situated on 8½ acres within John Hunt Park and is designed to support a variety of athletic, fitness and community activities.

“John Hunt Park is a valuable recreation asset to the Huntsville community,” Battle said. “Opening the John Hunt Park Recreation Center reinforces our commitment to providing accessible quality-of-life resources for Huntsville residents.”

The facility includes a gymnasium that can accommodate four high school regulation basketball courts or eight regulation volleyball courts. It also features a fitness room, multipurpose rooms, office space and concessions.

Outside, the center includes a covered and lighted pickleball complex with 24 competitive-play courts and one elite-play court.

The recreation center further expands the offerings at John Hunt Park, which spans more than 435 acres and serves as one of the city’s premier destinations for sports, outdoor recreation and special events.

City Council member Bill Kling said the project reflects years of investment in recreational opportunities across Huntsville.

“This recreation center is a valuable addition that will greatly enrich John Hunt Park,” Kling said. “Opening the center reflects advocacy for residents across the city.”

The facility is expected to host open-play basketball and volleyball activities, community programming and sports tournaments. City officials said the center’s location within John Hunt Park will complement the park’s existing athletic fields, trails and recreational amenities.

“The John Hunt Park Recreation Center elevates and supports the many activities hosted in John Hunt Park,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “Whether it’s a basketball, volleyball or pickleball tournament, the recreation center is sure to be the backdrop for memories and achievements that will last a lifetime.”

The center was designed by William M. Boehm & Associates and constructed by Fite Building Company.

Residents can view programming, rental opportunities and upcoming activities through Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s online registration platform.
