The Rocket City lands on another best-of list. Wallethub, a personal finance website, has ranked Huntsville as 2022’s best place for jobs in Alabama. Using factors ranging from job opportunities to employment growth to monthly average starting salary, Huntsville came in number one in Alabama and no. 21 nationwide.
“There are a variety of employment opportunities here that makes Huntsville such an attractive place for jobs, not just for work but it’s a great place to live,” says Claire Aiello with the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the national unemployment rate at 4.2%, while Huntsville’s unemployment rate sits well below at 2.3%. The numbers highlight a thriving job market but the challenges of a labor shortage remain in the spotlight.
Aiello says the Huntsville/Madison Chamber of Commerce is making a concerted effort to attract more employees to the area.
“We are rolling out a recruiting campaign that goes beyond the state, we are reaching out to people across the nation to let them know about the opportunities here in Huntsville,” she advises.
The campaign includes a focused effort on military bases across the nation to reach more veterans and service members transitioning out of the armed forces. “They’ve heard of Huntsville, we want them to know about the opportunities here,” says Aiello. “We want them to know that their talents have a home here.”
The video, titled “A Smart Place for Veterans,” is part of a series included in the A Smart Place campaign launched by the Huntsville/Madison Chamber of Commerce to attract a nationwide audience.
While many of Huntsville’s strengths are being featured in their efforts to attract new workers, Aiello says there’s one that always stands out to people moving from other parts of the country, “The short commute!” Huntsville’s relatively short commute times mean more time with family, recreation, and life outside of work.
Three other Alabama cities made Wallethub’s 2022 Best Cities for Jobs list: Mobile ranked 102, Birmingham came in at 107 and Montgomery was 159 out of 182 cities in the nationwide study.
