A 7-year-old Athens boy got to live out his dream this week, sworn in as an honorary officer with the Athens Police Department through the Magic Moments program.

Jace Dennis, who underwent a liver transplant, was given a badge, rode along in a patrol car and even got to pull over a driver as part of the experience Tuesday.

According to Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell, Jace’s interest in law enforcement traces back to his time with school resource officer Andy Pike at Renaissance School in Athens.

“This started with his contact with the SRO, Andy Pike, at the Renaissance School here in Athens,” Pressnell said. “Andy had a big impact on him wanting to be a police officer.”

Pressnell said the department was honored to be part of the day, describing it as exactly the kind of moment that makes the job worthwhile.

“That’s what this job is about, putting a smile on people’s face,” Pressnell said. “For him, to see his reaction when he walked in this room was just awesome.”

Jace’s parents said they’re grateful for the time and effort the department put into making the day happen for their son.
