Black and gold will take over downtown Athens on Friday as the community rallies around the Golden Eagles and the start of another football season.
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks has proclaimed Aug. 21 as “Rep the A Day,” coinciding with the city’s annual Pep Rally on The Square, a longtime tradition held ahead of Athens High School’s first home football game.
Marks signed the proclamation Wednesday surrounded by members of the Athens High School cheer and dance teams, Head Football Coach Cody Gross, Principal Willie Moore and other members of the school’s athletic staff.
“The Pep Rally on The Square really does a great job at showcasing the classic, southern character of Athens,” Marks said. “It brings players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, and fans together in our historic Downtown Athens to kick off the football season the only way we know how.”
The tradition has brought hundreds of residents downtown for decades to celebrate the Golden Eagles and officially kick off football season.
Athens City Schools will dismiss students early Friday to allow families to participate. The city is reminding parents to be aware of adjusted bus schedules.
Marks is encouraging residents throughout Athens to wear black and gold for the occasion.
“I encourage every citizen to find their black and gold and wear it with honor,” Marks said. “Let’s show these students that their entire community stands behind them.”
The Pep Rally on The Square begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday on Marion Street in downtown Athens.
