Downtown Athens-based AMBL Studios has been awarded a $20,000 Amex Shop Small® Grant from American Express and Main Street America, funding that will help the architecture and design firm expand its fabrication capabilities and enhance its storefront experience.

The grant will allow AMBL Studios to purchase a laser cutter for its fabrication shop and make improvements to its reception area, including built-in seating and product display shelving.

Owner Brad Mallette said the investment will help the company explore new opportunities in custom fabrication and product development.

“This grant is a real catalyst for us,” Mallette said. “The laser cutter opens up a whole new world of what we can explore and make, custom pieces both large and small. It lets us dig into R&D and build out a retail side of our business that we’ve been dreaming about since our inception.”

Located in downtown Athens, AMBL Studios is a multi-disciplinary architecture and design firm. Mallette said the upgrades are intended not only to expand the company’s capabilities but also to create a more welcoming environment for visitors.

The studio plans to host an open house this fall to showcase the new equipment and demonstrate its capabilities to the community.

Local leaders praised the award, calling it a reflection of the creativity and entrepreneurship found in downtown Athens.

“AMBL Studios is exactly the kind of creative, entrepreneurial business that makes downtown Athens special,” said Tere Richardson, executive director of Athens Main Street. “We’re thrilled to see Brad and his team earn this national recognition, and we can’t wait to watch them grow. This grant is a testament to the talent and innovation thriving in our district.”

Pammie Jimmar, president and CEO of the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce, said investments like the grant have benefits that extend beyond a single business.

“We’re so proud to celebrate AMBL Studios on this well-deserved honor,” Jimmar said. “Investments like this one don’t just help a single business, they strengthen our entire local economy.”

Bethany Shockney, president and CEO of the Limestone County Economic Development Association, said the recognition highlights the role small businesses play in the county’s continued growth.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Limestone County’s economy, and AMBL Studios is a shining example of homegrown innovation,” Shockney said. “We’re proud to see a local business recognized on a national stage, and we look forward to seeing how this investment helps AMBL Studios expand its capabilities and reach.”

Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks said the grant represents the type of investment that helps strengthen the city and its downtown district.

“This is exactly the kind of investment that keeps Athens moving forward,” Marks said. “Brad and the team at AMBL Studios are creating something special downtown, and we’re proud to see national partners recognize the talent and creativity we have right here in Athens.”

Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly called the grant a win for the entire county.

“Limestone County is growing because of businesses like AMBL Studios,” Daly said. “This grant is a well-earned recognition of Brad’s hard work and creativity, and it’s a win for our entire county.”

The grant program was launched through a $5 million contribution from American Express to support 250 small businesses as part of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration. Additional funding generated through Small Business Saturday expanded the initiative, allowing 505 businesses nationwide to receive grants.

According to American Express and Main Street America, recipients represent a wide range of industries and will use the funding to expand operations, invest in upgrades and introduce new products and services.

“Small businesses play a vital role in our communities,” said Jennifer Skyler, chief corporate affairs officer for American Express. “The Shop Small Grants Program builds on our longstanding commitment to small businesses by putting meaningful investment behind the people and places that drive local impact.”

Main Street America President and CEO Erin Barnes said the program helps address one of the biggest challenges facing entrepreneurs: access to funding.

“This is why we are so proud to partner with American Express on a program that provides meaningful support to small business owners working to strengthen their livelihoods and their communities,” Barnes said.
