A new facility near Alabama A&M aims to improve access to preventive care and chronic disease management.

Huntsville Hospital has expanded its footprint in North Huntsville with the opening of a new primary care clinic designed to bring routine and preventive healthcare services closer to residents, students and employees in the area.

Hospital leaders, community members and Alabama A&M University representatives gathered Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Physician Care North Huntsville, located at 4701 Meridian St., Suite G, near the university’s campus.

The new clinic addresses what hospital officials describe as a longstanding need for convenient access to primary care in a part of the city that has historically had fewer healthcare options.

Access to primary care is widely recognized as a key factor in preventing illness, managing chronic conditions and helping patients address health concerns before they become more serious.

“Our mission is to bring primary care and preventive services closer to neighbors across our community. That is exactly what Physician Care North Huntsville will do,” said Dwayne Mathis, executive director of the Huntsville Hospital Physicians Network. “Whether someone needs a routine checkup, help managing a chronic condition or care for an unexpected illness, having a trusted provider nearby makes it easier to get the right care at the right time.”

The clinic will be led by Tammie Smith, a physician assistant and Alabama A&M University alumna. It will serve adults ages 18 and older and offer a range of services including annual physicals, preventive screenings, immunizations, chronic disease management, employment and sports physicals, and treatment for routine illnesses.

The 3,200-square-foot facility includes five exam rooms and one procedure room.

Hospital officials said the project aligns with Huntsville Hospital Health System’s broader efforts to expand healthcare access throughout the region.

“It is our honor to care for this community,” said Tracy Doughty, president and chief operating officer of Huntsville Hospital. “As a nonprofit health system, we have the privilege of investing in services and facilities that improve the health of our neighbors. We know that when care is easier to reach, people are more likely to establish a relationship with a provider and receive the preventive care they need. This clinic represents our commitment to bringing more health care services closer to the people who live, learn and work in North Huntsville.”

The clinic is located on property owned by Alabama A&M University, reflecting what officials described as a shared commitment between the university and Huntsville Hospital to improve community health and access to care.

Physician Care North Huntsville will begin seeing patients on June 15. Visits will be available by appointment only.

Huntsville Hospital Health System serves more than 1.5 million people across North Alabama and southern Tennessee through a network of community nonprofit hospitals and healthcare facilities. The system employs more than 21,000 people across the region.
