A new video released by Mazda Toyota Manufacturing is putting a spotlight on the role of regional collaboration in fueling economic growth across North Alabama.

The video features local leaders who emphasize that the success of major employers like Mazda Toyota depends on cooperation across city and county lines, particularly when it comes to workforce development.

“Athens plays a vital role in the growth and prosperity that we’re seeing in North Alabama,” said Bethany Shockney, President and CEO of the Limestone County Economic Development Association. “Collaboration is extremely important. It’s not just about the exact spot, it’s about what’s happening in the region. We attract the workforce from a 75-mile radius. Workforce can’t stop at the county lines.”

Shockney also pointed to the broader regional effort required to sustain that growth.

“These 13 counties in North Alabama, we have to communicate. We have to collaborate into one overall workforce that supports each other,” she said.

Located in the Huntsville area, Mazda Toyota Manufacturing has become a key economic driver since production began in 2021.

The $2.3 billion facility employs 4,000 from across the region and has the capacity to produce up to 300,000 vehicles annually, including the Mazda CX-50 and Toyota Corolla Cross.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said the plant has played a significant role in the region’s continued expansion.

“We’ve grown year after year after year,” Battle said in the video. “Mazda Toyota is a very important element of that growth that we’ve seen.”

The video underscores a key message from economic leaders across North Alabama that continued success will depend on maintaining a regional mindset.

With workers commuting from across multiple counties, leaders say collaboration between communities is essential to supporting large-scale employers and sustaining long-term growth.

Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, located in the Huntsville metropolitan area in Limestone County, is one of the region’s largest employers and represents a partnership between two global automakers working together in a single facility.
