Athens-Limestone Hospital has completed its first spine surgery using advanced robotic technology, marking a significant step forward in surgical capabilities for patients in Limestone County.

The procedure was performed using the ExcelsiusGPS® robotic navigation system by orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Blake Boyett of The Orthopaedic Center.

Hospital officials say the system combines CT-guided imaging with robotic precision, allowing surgeons to visualize anatomy in real time and place spinal screws and devices with a higher level of accuracy while navigating sensitive spinal structures.

“The addition of ExcelsiusGPS® reflects our ongoing commitment to bringing advanced technology to our patients close to home,” said Traci Collins, president of Athens-Limestone Hospital. “This system allows our surgical team to operate with greater precision and confidence, ultimately improving patient safety and outcomes.”

The ExcelsiusGPS® platform is designed to support minimally invasive techniques, including smaller incisions, which can lead to reduced recovery times and less postoperative discomfort for patients.

Anthony Blackwood, director of surgical services, said the technology enhances both efficiency and outcomes.

“This is the latest technology in spine surgery, and it allows us to bring a higher level of precision into the operating room,” Blackwood said. “By combining CT-guided imaging and robotic capabilities with the surgeon’s expertise, we’re able to enhance accuracy, use smaller incisions, and ultimately improve outcomes for our patients. It truly brings together advanced technology and high-level surgical skill right here at Athens-Limestone Hospital.”

Boyett said the system provides surgeons with an added layer of confidence when performing complex procedures.

“This technology gives us a powerful tool to better plan and execute spine surgeries,” Boyett said. “With CT-guided navigation and robotic assistance, we are able to approach each case with enhanced accuracy, which is critical when working within the delicate structures of the spine.”

Hospital leaders say the milestone reflects a broader effort to expand access to advanced care locally, allowing patients to receive high-quality treatment without leaving the community.
