Baby steps: March of Dimes kicking off annual campaign

HUNTSVILLE — It’s a walk in the park, literally. And for a good cause.

The annual March for Babies walk is May 3 at Huntsville’s Big Spring Park and the March of Dimes is putting out a call for teams and supporters.

To answer the call, the organization is hosting a kickoff event Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at PaPPo’s Pizza on South Memorial Parkway in Huntsville.

The March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies. Through research, education, and advocacy, the organization works to prevent premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality.

“We want to welcome people to learn more about March of Dimes, why this is important and why our mission is still so relevant,” said Ashley Toms, executive director at March of Dimes Alabama.

Toms said the nationwide event is the organization’s largest annual campaign and it’s easy to be a supporter.

“It’s easy to sign up at marchforbabies.org and you can create your own personal page,” she said. “You can create a team and ask others to join you or sign up as an individual.”

The March of Dimes supports research, education, and advocacy to prevent premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality. The organization also supports programs that provide resources to families in need.

Event co-Chair Joey Ceci said the mission of the March of Dimes is incredibly personal.

“As the father of triplets, I am well aware of the vital work of this organization,” he said.  “My boys not only made it but grew into healthy, successful individuals. The research, advocacy, and support that March of Dimes provides are life-changing, and I am forever grateful for the difference they made in my family’s journey.

“Their work means everything to not only families like mine, but for babies everywhere.”

The organization also advocates for policies that improve maternal and infant health, striving to ensure that every baby is born healthy and has the best chance for a successful future.

“We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday and officially kick off our March for Babies campaign,” said Toms. “I also want to thank everyone for their support in giving every baby the healthiest chance at life.”
