Bama Blues set to ring in the new year with massive catfish on Wheeler Lake

DECATUR — The highly anticipated Bama Blues catfishing tournament, presented by Twisted Cat Outdoors, is set to return to reel in the new year.

One of the nation’s most exciting competitive fishing events is back on Wheeler Lake on Jan. 3. Now in its 12th year, this team-style tournament welcomes anglers ages 10 to 80, making it a family-friendly and inclusive competition for both seasoned pros and young competitors.

Wheeler Lake, a 68,000-acre reservoir created by Wheeler Dam, is renowned for its diverse fish populations, including giant blue catfish, largemouth bass, and crappie. Its expansive waters and scenic shoreline make it a prime location for both competitive and recreational fishing, attracting anglers from across the region.

“It’s exciting to see the economic impact events like Bama Blues bring to our community. Wheeler Lake is a world-class fishing destination, and where fishing memories are made,” said Decatur Morgan County Tourism President/CEO Danielle Gibson. “This tournament is always a highlight of the winter season.”

Spectators are invited to attend free of charge, with the main weigh-in taking place between 2 and 3 p.m. Jan. 3. Visitors can expect to see giant catfish — some weighing over 60 pounds and stretching more than four feet long — brought to the scales. These massive freshwater fish make for an unforgettable viewing experience and a thrilling moment for fans of all ages.

The event will feature food trucks, outdoor vendors, and on-site restrooms for spectator convenience. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Participants must be registered by Jan. 1. The event accepts cash and credit payments. Full event schedules will be shared via email and posted online.
