RUSSELLVILLE — Demolition of the bridge on SR-243 at Cedar Creek in Franklin County is underway, the Alabama Department of Transportation said.

Removal of the 60-year-old bridge southeast of Russellville will make way for a replacement to be constructed by contractor Miller and Miller.

ALDOT estimates the $2.8 million project will take about a year.

The road will remain closed to traffic until the new bridge, a wider and safer structure built to modern standards, is substantially complete.

ALDOT advises motorists to plan alternate routes and additional travel time.

Commercial traffic must use the posted official detour, which is U.S. 43 from Russellville to Highway 13 at Spruce Pine to Highway 195 in Haleyville for southbound traffic, and vice versa for northbound traffic.
