North Alabama students interested in attending one of the nation’s military service academies will have an opportunity this month to learn more about the congressional nomination process.

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt‘s office will host a service academy information session Oct. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering, 229 Wynn Drive NW in Huntsville.

The Huntsville event is one of three sessions Britt’s office is holding across Alabama in October, with additional events scheduled in Birmingham and Montgomery.

Students and families will be able to meet with representatives from the service academies as well as Marion Military Institute and learn about the process for seeking a congressional nomination.

Britt’s office handles nominations to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination.

Applicants seeking a nomination from Britt must be Alabama residents and have an open application with at least one service academy. Her office also requires applicants to submit a transcript, ACT or SAT scores, three letters of recommendation and a resume. A congressional nomination does not guarantee admission, with each academy making its own appointment decisions.

North Alabama has had a strong showing in Britt’s recent service academy nominations. Her office announced in August that nine students from the region whom she nominated were beginning at West Point, the Naval Academy or Air Force Academy this fall. They included students from Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, Brownsboro, Owens Cross Roads and Athens.

The Huntsville session is free to attend, and Britt’s office said participation is voluntary and will have no effect on a student’s application status.

The other sessions are scheduled for Oct. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Homewood Public Library in Birmingham and Oct. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Auburn University at Montgomery.

More information about the nomination process is available through Sen. Katie Britt’s service academy nominations page.
