Strong to host fourth annual Academy Day for North Alabama students

North Alabama high school students considering a future at one of the nation’s military service academies will have an opportunity Saturday to learn more about the path from application to appointment.

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) will host his fourth annual Military Service and Academy Day on Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at Auburn University’s Research and Innovation Campus in Huntsville.

The event will bring together representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, along with military preparatory schools, collegiate ROTC programs and the Alabama National Guard.

“The fact that so many North Alabamians willingly answer the call to serve our nation in uniform speaks volumes of the patriotism held by our district’s youth,” Strong said. “It has been my honor to nominate over 150 young men and women to date to attend U.S. service academies and ensure students are prepared to take the next step in their path to leading the next generation of American servicemembers.”

For students interested in attending a service academy, Academy Day offers a chance to learn about admissions, eligibility requirements and the congressional nomination process.

Applicants to most U.S. service academies must receive a nomination from an authorized source, which can include a member of Congress, the vice president or the president. Strong is encouraging students interested in seeking his nomination to attend Saturday’s event.

Strong represents Alabama’s 5th Congressional District, which includes much of North Alabama, and has nominated more than 150 students to U.S. service academies since taking office.

The event will be held at Auburn University’s Research and Innovation Campus, 345 Voyager Way in Huntsville.
