Calhoun hosts summer welding camp for high school girls

TANNER — Calhoun Community College is hosting its annual SWeETy Welding Camp at its Decatur campus this summer.

The camp, through a partnership with the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, will train up to 10 high school-age girls with electrical and welding skills.

“Many young women are interested in welding and technical fields but don’t have an opportunity to expand their knowledge in that area at school,” said Gwen Baker, Calhoun’s dual enrollment director. “SWeETy camp is ideal for those young ladies, as it helps expand their knowledge in a field that has been seen for many years as non-traditional for women.”

The camp is June 15-17 from 7:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, in the Advanced Technology Center on Calhoun’s Decatur campus.

The SWeETy Welding Camp is designed specifically for girls in 9th through 12th grade who are interested in welding and electrical technology. The goal is to offer them an opportunity to gain basic hands-on experience that can lead to high-paying careers in high-growth industries.

After studying the importance of safety, the campers learn about welding and electrical technology. This includes various welding processes, procedures, electrical wiring of parts and components.

Sponsors for this year’s camp are Indorama Ventures, Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, and SparkS.
