Catch summer’s blockbusters at King Drive-In in Russellville

RUSSELLVILLE — Want to see “Top Gun: Maverick” or “Jurassic Park: World Dominion,” but you’re still not quite comfortable in a theater full of strangers?

King Drive-In in Russellville, just off U.S. 43, is the place for you. Look for the faded yellow crown atop a blue marquee announcing the weekend’s shows.

The projectors have been running since 1949, making the King the state’s oldest continuously operated drive-in – it was open even throughout the pandemic.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, catch a double feature for only $7 per person from the comfort of your vehicle. Or your lawn chairs. Or your tailgate. Or your lawn chairs in the bed of your pickup truck.

My daughter, my parents, and I made the drive a few years ago to see “Guardians of
the Galaxy Vol. 2” and had a blast. We spread a blanket in front of the car then headed
to the concession stand for cheeseburgers, fries, and soft drinks. They also serve
chicken sandwiches, nachos, candy, hot dogs, and, of course, hot buttery popcorn.

After eating, we climbed back into the car and tuned the radio to the station broadcasting the movie and enjoyed the show. A portable radio will work, too, if you want to sit outside your vehicle.

Spots are first come, first served, and it’s a good idea to get to the ticket booth when it
opens at 6 p.m., especially if the movie is expected to do well. The lot sold out a couple
of weeks ago when “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic Park: World Dominion” was the
double feature.

The drive-in is open through December. Check the King Drive-In Facebook page for weekly announcements about what’s playing. A playground is available for kiddos to work off some energy before the movies start. The show goes on rain or shine.

Admission (cash only) is: $7 – Adults 12 and up; $4 – Children 6-11; Free – Children 5 and under.

The hours of operation are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6-11 p.m.
