Chamber accepting nominations for annual Small Business Awards

HUNTSVILLE — Every year, the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce shines a bright light on local small businesses whose hard work and dedication makes the Huntsville community hum. It is the 37th annual Small Business Awards season and it kicks off with nominations.

Now through June 16, businesses can be nominated in a dozen categories. The awards will be presented at the annual Small Business Awards Ceremony Nov. 1.

Among the requirements for nomination are Chamber membership in good standing; licensed in the state of Alabama; fewer than 250 employees; and in business at least three years.

Categories are Culinary Business of the Year; Medical Practice of the Year; Nonprofit of the Year and Local Retailer of the Year. A newer category called Local “Creative” of the Year recognizes a business or individual that provides unique products, services, or experiences for their customers. Other categoreis include Technology Business of the Year; Emerging Business of the Year; and Woman-Owned Business of the Year where the woman owns 51% or more of the business.

An award is given for nongovernment Professional Services Business of the Year that covers licensed professionals such as accountants and attorneys; and commercial Services Business of the Year covering businesses such as landscaping, pest control and the like.

There are two categories for government contractors – Government Contracting Professional Services Business of the Year and Government Contracting Technology Business of the Year.
