Chuco Underground joins the Huntsville basement bar scene

HUNTSVILLE – Huntsville continues to add new breweries, bars and social spaces across the city. As you check out the rooftop bars that stretch sky-high or the outdoor spaces with live music, do not forget to look for the party beneath your feet.

Chuco Underground is the newest  “basement bar” to hit Huntsville. Blink and you’ll miss the entrance right off of the main square in downtown Huntsville, tucked between Del Chuco Cocina Y Cantina and Beezr. There is also another entrance for those coming from Clinton Row up Jefferson Street. Take the back entrance in the alley across from 106 Jefferson Hotel toward Jefferson Street Pub where the illuminated Chuco Underground sign is sure to grab your attention.

Venture down the steps and through the nondescript door and you will enter into a comfortable, urban-chic bar. The clustered couch seating makes it easy to lounge as you listen to live music, chat with friends or sip on a unique cocktail. The underground bar features performances from local musicians every Wednesday and Thursday to accompany their happy hour from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Chuco Underground is open Wednesday – Saturday, 4:00 p.m. to Midnight, making this basement bar a great place to start your night, grab an after-dinner cocktail or wind down at the end of a fun day in Huntsville.

While the menu at Chuco Underground does offer traditional cocktail selections, take a chance on one of their cultivated concoctions. Try the Prickly Pear— a mix of Grey Goose Vodka, pear foam, house spiced pear syrup, fresh lemon juice, and lillet blanc— or go for a non-alcoholic mocktail like the Springarite— a combination of house strawberry syrup, grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice, and agave. Whatever your taste may be, Chuco Underground is sure to satisfy.

The partner restaurant, Del Chuco Cocina Y Cantina, sits above the bar and offers a delectable tex-mex menu with its own selection of cocktails, margaritas and more.

Chuco Underground joins the growing list of underground bars in downtown Huntsville, all of which bring their own unique flair to the growing culinary and social scene. There is the long-time local favorite Voodoo Lounge— a go-to spot for live music seven days a week. Another option is the out-of-the-ordinary Phat Sammy’s tiki lounge that offers fun island-inspired drinks and mouthwatering asian bites. For those who want that authentic speakeasy experience there is no better option than Catacomb 435. This art-deco speakeasy is reservation only— a rule that is enforced as they will ask for the exclusive nightly password given through the reservation before they allow entry. This spot is also unique as there is no set menu, instead relying on the expertise of the bartender to craft a cocktail specific to each customer’s taste.

Huntsville continues to bring new ways to enjoy the growing city at every elevation.  As you explore, taste and see all the city has to offer, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for new spots all around, up above and down below the busy streets. Trust us, it is worth taking a dive into all of these unique, eclectic spaces that are just waiting to be discovered.
