Court of Criminal Appeals upholds Maddux murder conviction in Cullman County

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed last year’s murder conviction of William Thomas Maddux of Cullman, Attorney General Steve Marshall announced.

Maddux, 35, was convicted in the Cullman County Circuit Court on June 28, 2024 in the murder of his stepfather, Perry Shoemake. He was sentenced Sept. 3, 2024 to 99 years in prison for the Nov. 12, 2017 shooting death.

The evidence at trial showed that an intoxicated Maddux went to the residence of his mother and stepfather, according to a news release from Marshall’s office.

According to reports, Maddux attempted to come into the house but was not let in and refused to leave.

Shoemake went inside to call 911 but Maddux broke into the house and shot and killed Shoemake who was on the phone when he died.

Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker’s office prosecuted the case and obtained the guilty verdict.

Maddux sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process and the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirmed the conviction, issuing its decision Aug. 15.

Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Kyley Goldhagen for her work on the case and thanked Crocker and his staff for their valuable assistance in defending the conviction.
