‘Dangerous heat’ forecast for region

(NWS/Cotnributed, 256 Today)

HUNTSVILLE — The National Weather Service Huntsville office has issued an excessive heat warning for much of the Tennessee Valley for today and Friday.

The service said highs will range between 95 and 100 degrees with heat index values up to 114 degrees along and west of I-65 in Alabama and up to 109 degrees elsewhere.

“An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for north-central and northwest Alabama, with a Heat Advisory for areas east including southern middle Tennessee,” the weather service said. “Both the warning and advisory are in effect through 8 p.m. Friday – this includes the overnight hours tonight to account for lingering heat impacts well past sunset.”

The weather service said the advisory may need to be extended into Saturday for portions of the local area as well.

But, there is good news: A cooler air mass will begin to move into the region Sunday and through early next week. Highs in the mid to upper 80s are forecast by Tuesday.
