U.S. Rep. Dale Strong visited Drake State Community and Technical College on Tuesday, touring its advanced training facilities and highlighting the school’s role in workforce development as it celebrates its 65th anniversary.

Strong joined Drake State President Patricia Sims, along with faculty and staff, at the college’s Leidos Advanced Training Center, a facility designed to prepare students for careers in technology and emerging industries through partnerships with North Alabama businesses.

The visit marked both a milestone anniversary for the college and a broader recognition of its impact on education and job training in the region.

“Drake State is where our community comes to build a future. What Congressman Strong’s sustained support makes possible is more than just the programs and resources we need, but the opportunity for anyone in our community who dreams of higher education and more skills training to have access to it,” Sims said.

During the tour, Strong emphasized the importance of aligning education with industry needs, particularly in a region anchored by major federal and defense employers.

“Drake State is at the forefront of building Alabama’s next generation of skilled workers,” U.S. Rep. Strong said. “By bringing together education, business, and industry, they are not only strengthening the economy but also creating real opportunities for people right here at home. I’m proud to support Drake State’s continued growth and its vital role in advancing technical education and career training, positioning North Alabama as a leader in workforce development.”

Strong serves as vice chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science and has been an advocate for community colleges and workforce-focused education programs.

Drake State leaders say partnerships with local industry remain central to the college’s mission, helping connect students with hands-on training and career pathways in high-demand fields.

The visit is part of Community College Month activities, which highlight the institution’s programs, students and impact across the region.

Established in 1961, Drake State is a historically Black community college offering two-year degrees, certificates, adult education and customized workforce training. The campus is located in the heart of Huntsville, near major employers including NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal, positioning it as a key pipeline for the area’s aerospace, defense and technology workforce.
