Election roundup: Morgan and DeKalb counties to hold runoff for commission races

HUNTSVILLE – Incumbents carried the day in most races across the Tennessee Valley in Tuesday’s primary elections.

However, there also was a skin-of-their-teeth race in Madison County and runoffs will be held in two DeKalb County and Morgan County commission races, due to candidates not receiving a majority of the votes.

In DeKalb County, challenger Brent Rhodes pulled 40.71% of the vote over incumbent Commissioner Terry Harris’ 35.72% to force a runoff.

The Morgan County Commission District 3 race saw incumbent Commissioner Don Stisher receive 38.86% of the vote, ahead of Matthew Frost with 32.89%.

The closest primary race of the day took place in the Libertarian primary for Madison County Commission chairman. Alan Barksdale (50.34%) held off Jason Clark (49.66%) by just two votes, 148-146, to take the party’s nomination in the Nov. 5 general election.

As expected, there was a low turnout statewide with just 16.69% of the state’s 320,723 registered voters casting ballots.
