ROGERSVILLE – After eight state championships and more than 700 victories, Lauderdale County High School girls basketball coach Brant Llewellyn is stepping down.

According to published reports, the coach is retiring after 25 years because of what he said were nondisclosed health issues. He also has said he has other opportunities outside of education.

The Tigers have won a state-record 13 championships, eight under Llewellyn, who took over for Larry Sinyard in 1999. Llewellyn is tied for second among girls coaches with eight titles. Hazel Green’s Tim Miller has 11 championships and Spring Garden’s Ricky Austin and Pisgah’s Carey Ellison also have eight.

The AHSAA lists Llewellyn with a 736-135 career record.

Lauderdale County finished the year 28-2 and was ranked Class 3A No. 1 throughout the past season, but was upset by Good Hope in the Northwest Regional final.

The Tigers last won a state championship in 2016, the end of a five-year title run in Class 3A.
