Erica White seeks Madison City Council District 6 seat

MADISON – Erica White has announced her intention to run for Madison City Council  District 6.

White told 256 Today quality of life, communication, and infrastructure top her priorities in Madison.

“I think Madison is at a point where we need to bridge the gap between longtime residents and those who are new to the area,” she said. “Good communication, especially with public works, is key to making sure everyone feels heard.”

White said maintaining the quality of local schools is also a central part of her platform.

“A lot of families move to Madison for the schools, and we have to support them,” she said. “It’s especially important in my district.”

She also pointed to infrastructure issues as a growing concern.

“Roads and traffic are something residents deal with every day if you’re commuting down Slaughter Road or across town,” White said. “It’s important to address these challenges.”

White said her broader goal is to help maintain and improve quality of life across the city.

“Madison is known for its quality of life,” she said. “I want to make sure that remains true for everyone.”

She is the first candidate to announce for District 6; the municipal election is Aug. 26.

After graduating from Tuskegee University, White began her career as an electrical engineer with the Department of Defense. In 2019, she and her family built a home in the district, committing them to the area.

“Out of all of the cities in the country, there’s nowhere else I’d choose to live and raise my  children,” White said. “As a native of Detroit, Mich., and after having traveled all over the country (and world), I chose Madison. I still choose Madison.

“My neighborhood is filled with long-term residents who’ve raised several generations in the area, as well as newcomers who are just discovering how special Madison is. I want to work to preserve the greatness that has drawn so many people to this city. I want to support the inevitable growth in a thoughtful way.”

After working as a DOD civilian for 11 years, White became a local business owner. She said the positions she held as a DOD civilian helped hone her critical thinking skills, as well as her ability to collaborate with people of all backgrounds with different ideas.

Entrepreneurship has taught her leadership, financial management, as well as creative thinking. White said her background in service has taught her the importance of listening, clear communication and empathy.
