The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office is expanding safety measures across several county facilities and patrol operations with the deployment of LifeVac anti-choking devices.
According to the sheriff’s office, 50 LifeVac devices are being placed throughout the Etowah County Jail, Courthouse and Judicial Building.
Patrol deputies and members of the Emergency Services Unit will also carry the devices in the field to assist during choking emergencies.
LifeVac devices are portable suction tools designed to help clear airway obstructions. The non-powered devices create negative pressure using a one-way valve system to remove objects from a choking victim’s airway when traditional first-aid methods are unsuccessful.
“We have to be prepared for numerous different situations,” said Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton. “Whether a crime is being committed or someone is in need of medical assistance, we’re often some of the first to arrive on scene. As sheriff, my goal is to give you the peace of mind that our deputies are well-trained and equipped to help you in your time of need.”
Officials said the devices will be available in areas where staff, inmates, court personnel and visitors may be present, providing another potential life-saving tool when seconds matter.
The company that manufactures LifeVac recently announced that the device received authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a second-line treatment for choking emergencies after standard choking protocols have been attempted.
The sheriff’s office says the deployment reflects its continued focus on safety and service to the community.
