First Stop’s annual report reflects impact for Huntsville’s homeless 

HUNTSVILLE – First Stop’s mission as an advocate and primary resource option for homeless residents is to help the disenfranchised achieve. If the group’s 2023 Annual Report is a true barometer, that mission is on course.

The report highlights a record year of impact, showcasing the organization’s significant accomplishments and milestones in serving the homeless population.

“2023 was a year of gratitude and growth,” Executive Director Jennifer Geist said. “I am extremely thankful to have celebrated our 15th anniversary of serving individuals experiencing homelessness. The support that First Stop receives from our community is such a tremendous blessing.

“In November of 2023, we completed construction on our new facility, which allows us to better assist the growing homeless population.”

According to the 2023 report, First Stop saw a 19% increase in individuals supported at its Day Center, providing access to meals, showers, and partner agency services to those in need. Additionally, the organization facilitated a 23% increase in new client intakes, working individually with people to assess the reasons behind their homelessness and creating clear paths to stability.

First Stop also procured 23% more vital records documents, assisting clients in accessing shelters, job opportunities, benefits, and housing.

The Annual Report provides a comprehensive overview of First Stop’s programs, services, and outcomes, demonstrating the organization’s dedication to improving the lives of those experiencing homelessness. It also includes financial statements and insights into future initiatives.

First Stop was formed in 2001 through a collaborative effort between the City of Huntsville and the Interfaith Mission Service with the mission to serve and assist the homeless population. Initially focusing on providing essential services, the organization later refined its mission to emphasize support aimed at helping homeless individuals achieve sustainable housing. 

In 2008, First Stop was incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
