A global technology company is bringing production of one of its advanced defense computing platforms to the United States for the first time, and Huntsville is where it is happening.
Kontron announced Tuesday that its rugged VX307H computing platform is now being manufactured at Nextek, a Kontron company in Huntsville, marking the first U.S. production of the system.
The move also represents the first step in a broader expansion of Kontron’s U.S. manufacturing operations for defense electronics, with additional products expected to follow.
“Defense customers are asking for greater supply-chain resilience, faster availability and closer access to support,” said Stephanie Perdue, director of products North America at Kontron. “Bringing VX307H production to the U.S. directly addresses those needs while expanding our domestic VPX manufacturing capabilities.”
The VX307H is a rugged computing platform designed for demanding military applications, including sensor systems, command and control, autonomous operations and tactical communications.
By moving production to Huntsville, Kontron is also changing how it supplies the equipment to customers.
Previously manufactured on a build-to-order basis, the VX307H will now be produced for inventory, allowing the company to improve availability and shorten delivery times for U.S. defense customers.
The Huntsville operation will handle the manufacturing process from printed circuit board assembly through final assembly and testing.
“Building the VX307H in Huntsville gives customers a direct path from manufacturing and testing through long-term support,” said Dan Meeks, president of Nextek. “Our high-reliability manufacturing and testing capabilities are well suited to the demands of mission-critical defense electronics.”
Nextek specializes in advanced electronics manufacturing for aerospace, defense and other industries requiring highly reliable components.
Its Huntsville-area facility provides printed circuit board assembly, electronic system integration and testing, supported by aerospace and defense quality certifications and manufacturing standards.
The VX307H uses Intel Xeon processors and is designed to deliver high-performance computing in environments where equipment must withstand vibration, temperature extremes and other challenging operating conditions.
The platform is designed in accordance with Sensor Open Systems Architecture, or SOSA, requirements, which promote compatibility and interoperability among military electronic systems.
Kontron said the VX307H is the first product in its expanded U.S. VPX manufacturing strategy, with production of the VX3060 and VX30101 platforms planned to follow.
The company announced the milestone in conjunction with the opening of the Association of the United States Army’s 2026 annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
Headquartered in Austria, Kontron operates in more than 20 countries and employs approximately 6,500 people worldwide.
The announcement establishes Huntsville as the first U.S. manufacturing location for the VX307H and positions Nextek to support additional domestic production as Kontron expands its defense computing portfolio.
